Hawea and Wanaka

Lyall Campbell welcomed us into her A-frame house in Hawea. Surrounded by mountains and with views down to the lake, it used to be the family holiday home, built by the Campbells when the roads were unsurfaced and the land was cheap - Lyall has lived there, offering a couple of rooms as B&B accomodation, for the last twelve years.

There are now public tennis courts just next door, and a children's playground, which Rosa and Melissa made use of together with Max and Myra, who joined us here with their dad, Lisa's husband, Paul Campbell ...

... but the best local amenity is the landscape, and the opportunities for 'tramping' that abound.

There were two dogs to become acquainted with, too - the Levitt-Campbell's dog Luna, and Lyall's little SuSu:

The autumn here is beautiful - I'm sure spring and summer are too, and in the winter there's lots of skiing. But we couldn't stay that long - on the Sunday morning, we headed South.

Well, you've brought it all back to me - we visited both Queens Town and Wanaka (which I found more beautiful than Queenstown - less touristy) when we were in N.Z - is it only 18 months ago! We didn't luge but we watched others doing all the adrenaline raising sports young people do in the South Island. Yes I agree, one week isn't enough to appreciate what a beautiful country it is, but enough to whet your appetite to maybe return for a longer period.
It looks great to see Rosa enjoying her birthday with friends, she made the right choice celebrating it early, but we did think of her on the 22nd and wished her well.
Just got your text message, about the American Immigration - tell me about it - remember Larry having to take his plaster boot off and having his crutches put through a 'special' machine to sus out whether we were carrying anything we shouldn't be. Hey-ho "Travellers must be content!"
Don't let it spoil your happy memories. Looking forward to seeing you all soon.
Love
Liz
